Description

The purposes of this study are to apply the aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) system to urban Japan and to construct an energy system that achieves a high degree of environmental preservation through energy conservation. In this paper, the ATES system saves heat in the shallow aquifer enclosed by cut-off walls, which are needed in the construction of the underground section of a building. To verify the basic performance of the proposed system, cold water was stored for several days in the central region of Tokyo. As a result, the efficiency of heat recovery reached more than 80% at 24-hour cycles. The effects from the cutoff walls are demonstrated in the form of results from thermal efficiency and thermal diffusion simulations.
