Description

Some building designers and managers may be tempted to increase ventilation above ASHRAE’s indoor air quality standard levels for occupant comfort and health. With emergence of the USGBC’s LEED® system, a building can achieve an additional LEED credit by increasing air ventilation rates by 30% above the minimum rates required by ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2004. This article explains how implementing this strategy with economizers and dedicated outdoor air systems can result in less energy needed for cooling through case studies of four different climates in the U.S.
