Description

A numerical prediction is presented for an axisymmetric buoyant air jet discharge vertically downward into a room. An algebraic stress model was used to close the mean transport equations which were then solved using the finite-volume method. The numerical method tracked the initial development of the jet. The negative buoyancy leads to flow reversal; the resultant flow pattern resembles an inverted fountain. The recirculation associated with the fountain has significant implications for the level of thermal mixing achieved by the jet.
