Description

1) Points out that the climate in a glazed space and the energy requirements in it are greatly affected by the outside climate, particularly by solar radiation. When calculations are made for a glazed space, solar radiation must therefore be treated considerably more fully than for a conventional building with normal-size windows. Describes a simple manual calculation method developed to assess the temperature and energy requirement in glazed spaces. The effect of the glazed space on the energy requirements of surrounding buildings can also be estimated. States the method should be used as early as possible at the preliminary design stage so that an idea can be gained of the difference between alternative designs. 2) Describes the application of the method to two projects – a glazed courtyard and blocks of flats with glazed verandas. Field measurements were made in both cases.
