Description

This work presents results of measurements of heat and mass transfer coefficients occurring during evaporative cooling in an experimental apparatus. Void fraction changes were accomplished by placing controlled amounts of aspen pad material in the test section of the apparatus whose length was also varied. The resulting transfer coefficients were analyzed to correlate the data as a function of pertinent dimensionless variables. Several proposed characteristic lengths were evaluated on the basis of the quality of the statistical parameters for the correlations, which were evaluated also by comparison of all included parameters with previous work. On this basis, it was found that the length of the test section is the best selection. The mass transfer data were analyzed by using the heat transfer correlation and the heat and mass transfer analogy.
