Emerging Technologies: Heat Pumps for Cold Climates

Original price was: $8.00.Current price is: $4.00.

Description

Air-source heat pumps (ASHP) are air conditioners with a reversing valve and a few additional components that allow the vapor cycle to pump heat either out of the conditioned space (cooling) or into the conditioned space (heating). The resulting cost increase is small compared to an air conditioner with electric resistance heating and much less than the additional cost of a gas furnace.

Emerging Technologies: Heat Pumps for Cold Climates

Journal Article by ASHRAE, 2009

Description

Typically, air-source heat pumps (ASHPs) are unattractive as a heat source in cold climates. Several design modifications and technologies have been recently proposed or introduced (alone and in combination) for cold-climate heat pumps and, within the last five years, at least two U.S. companies have designed ASHPs for cold climates. This month’s Emerging Technologies discusses the reliability of these new designs and the potential for primary energy savings.
