When fossil fuel was plentiful at reasonable prices and our ecology was seemingly undamaged, the “forgiving” re-heat systems were in. Today we are about to face the “ecological cost” of producing energy. Within this decade alone, doubling, tripling, even tenfold increases can be anticipated over the 1970 energy costs. We are seeing therefore, a growing demand by owners for office mechanical systems which can be maintained at 25 to 40 cents per square foot per-year. The new products offered by current technolgy permit the VAV system to do just that – produce a comfortable environment for building occupants.

Office buildings, because of codes, hours of occupancy, initial and operating costs, are prime candidates for variable air volume systems. Of course, like Diogenes, searching lantern in hand for “the honest man”, we may search psychrometric chart in hand, for the classic “variable air volume” system only to find that it is a myth, that it is often coupled or joined to other systems to form a hybrid.

This paper ignores “storage” and “temperature swing” effects generally negated by light-weight construction framing. Precise calculations are required by the “unforgiving” variable air volume systems to assure adequate but not excessive “shared” system supply air. (See 1973 ASHRAE Systems Volume, Chapter 3, for detailed calculation analysis). We shall also assume plenum return.

It seems that most corporations have their chief executive on a building’s top floor in the south-west corner office! This leads to a discussion of “Peak Loads.”
