Description
Passive ventilation systems are considered alternatives to mechanical ventilation systems. Solar chimney is a passive ventilation system which relies on natural driving force, which is the energy from the sun. This paper aims to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed solar chimney integrated into a room for ventilation. Thermal performance of a full scale solar chimney was experimentally investigated. Measurements of ambient air temperature, air temperature inside chimney, surface temperatures of aluminium and air velocity at chimney outlet were conducted between 10/8/2015 and 20/8/2015. The tests were conducted between 9:00 am ~ 14:00 h and 14:00 h ~18:30 h. The results show that the maximum air flow rate in the chimney is 0.69 kg/s during high solar radiation; 890 W/m2. The maximum surface temperature of aluminium plate reaches 86°C at 1:30 pm due to great density of incident solar radiation at that time, while temperature decreases to 65°C at 3:30 pm. This causes increase air flow inside the system. The findings show that solar chimney demonstrates high air flow at chimney outlet according to thermal gradients inside the chimney. Thus, they can be used for natural ventilation and achieving low energy houses.
