Description
A 2.25 million gal (8,517 m 3 ) chilled water storage cooling system for the Central Energy Plant (CEP) #2 at an Army installation has been in operation since May 1996. The installation has 10.4 million sq ft (0.97 million m 2 )of building space and services housing and offices for 28,000 population. A district cooling system with the CEP #2 covers more than half of the installation. During the first year of operation in 1996, the system shifted more than 3 MW of electrical demand from the on-peak to off-peak period. Electrical cost savings for the installation is calculated to be about $430,000 during the first year of operation. The system will pay back in less than 3 years for the net construction cost of $1,200,000. A second system is currently under design for another central energy plant (CEP #1) at the installation.
