This paper describes the use of the Energy Resilience of Interacting Networks (ERIN) modeling tool developed by ERDC and Big Ladder Software for a pilot study at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, focused on assessing resilience of thermal and power systems. A resilience module using ERIN was developed under IEA EBC Annex 73 and a DoD ESTCP project EW18-5281 and has been integrated into the System Master PLanner (SMPL) tool. Integration into SMPL adds a graphical user interface, simulation server, and statistical post-processing, simplifying development and interpretation of models. Building and infrastructure data from Fort Wainwright was used to simulate a combined heat and power production plant, steam heating network, and an associated electrical network. Four scenarios were modeled: normal operations, failure of the electrical power grid, threat-based disruption of on-site electrical power distribution, and disruption of on-site electrical power and steam generation. Results were compared to typical resilience goals to determine requirements and inform strategies for mitigation. An additional run of the final scenario implemented a potential mitigation strategy and illustrated the effectiveness of ERIN in assessing resilience strategies for risk reduction. The value of integrating resilience modeling into the energy master planning process, especially in cold climates where resilience in heating systems is essential, is seen in the analysis conducted with ERIN.
