Description
In this first part of a two-part article, the chemical analysis protocol developed for research on alternative refrigerant fluids at the Thermophysics Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is described, and the application of spectroscopic methods in the implementation of this protocol is discussed in detail. The spectroscopic techniques include mass spectrometry, infrared spectrophotometry, and multinuclear (1H, 13C, and 19F) nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. The compilation of a spectral database and the elucidation of general spectroscopic trends are also described.
