Description
This paper discusses the development of a fenestrationperformance map that will help the building system designercross-examine code-compliant fenestration systems from thehuman comfort standpoint. The work presented here isobtained using the BCAP program that was developed duringASHRAE research projects 657 and 907 and improved upon inASHRAE research project 1162 to incorporate a user-definedfenestration system.
Human thermal comfort in a room is strongly influencedby the presence of a fenestration system because of thedistinctly different thermal and optical properties it possessesin comparison to the walls. Thus, sizing the fenestration systemfrom the thermal comfort standpoint remains the biggest challengefor building designers. This paper presents a possiblesolution to the challenge in the form of a fenestration performancemap, which will help the designer make judiciouschoices when selecting a fenestration system. The paper alsodiscusses the location of a room heating system during winterto achieve maximum comfortable floor space area.
