Description

A deficient building envelope resulted in serious mold contamination at Honoré-Mercier Hospital, a 37-year-old, 300-bed health-care center near Montreal. This article explains how the complete renovation project used enthalpy wheels and run-around coils, which recover heat from exhaust air, along with a zoning strategy to achieve a 47% reduction in energy use. The hospital consumed less energy after the project’s completion even though 90,000 ft2 of space was added to the building. The designers won a first-place ASHRAE Technology Award.
