Description

In nuclear power plants with concrete/steel containments, it is expected that these containments will not be breached in case of accidents, thus preventing the release of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. A proposal to use off-site mobile pumps and liquid-chilling units is put forward to back-up the emergency heat-removal systems of nuclear power plants with the aim of further enhancing the integrity of the concrete/steel containment. This proposal is made with reference to the pressurised water reactor, the most common type of reactor used in the world. It is seen that the proposed system also can be applied to back-up the water heat exchanger circuits of other types of reactors.
