Vertical temperature distribution is important in considering supply air requirements for a room with a raised floor HVAC system. ASHRAE Standard 55-1992 recommends that the vertical temperature difference between 0.1 m and 1.7 m above the floor level in an occupied zone be maintained to within 3°C. In this study, detailed laboratory experiments were conducted using a full-scale test room to obtain the design supply air requirements. Experiments were carried out under various conditions of supply air volume, internal loads, and types of air outlets. The main results are described in this paper. Vertical temperature distribution in an occupied zone is significantly influenced by the supply air volume, internal load, the throw affected by the supply air volume and internal load, and the type of floor air outlet. Furthermore, this study has provided quantitative data on how these parameters impact vertical temperature distribution. The study has also provided a method of obtaining design supply air requirements for raised floor HVAC systems.
