Description

Commissioning smoke control systems just got easier with the publication of Guideline 1.5-2012.

Guideline 1.5 describes the technical requirements for the application of the Commissioning Process described in ASHRAE Guideline 0 that will verify that the smoke control system achieves the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR). The procedures, methods, and documentation requirements in this guideline describe the application of the Commissioning Process for each project delivery phase from Predesign through Occupancy/Operations, for all types and sizes of smoke control systems, to support the Commissioning Process activities described in ASHRAE Guideline 0. This includes requirements for smoke control systems to fully support the Commissioning Process activities, verification during each phase of the Commissioning Process, acceptance during each phase, documentation during each phase, a systems manual, and training for operations and maintenance (O&M) personnel and occupants.

The procedures, methods, and documentation requirements apply to new construction and ongoing Commissioning Process activities or requirements of all or portions of buildings and facilities. They also can be applied to rehab, retrocommissioning, or recommissioning projects.

ASHRAE Guideline 1.5 builds upon the concepts of ASHRAE Guideline 5-1994 (RA 2001) and replaces it. Annexes are included in this guideline to assist in the implementation of the Cx process for smoke control systems and components. The annexes are based upon actual project experience, with details based upon current practice, and illustrate application of the Cx process for smoke control systems and components. The annexes should be viewed as examples of how to develop and define ongoing communications; OPR, Basis of Design (BoD), and Commissioning Plan documents; and verification, testing requirements, and training. This is not intended to be a complete user’s manual but is instead intended as a guide.
