Single-duct variable-air-volume (VAV) systems are widelyused to condition buildings in the United States. When such asystem serves multiple zones with different load profiles, simultaneouscooling and heating frequently occur. To avoid thisinefficient scenario, dual VAV systems, where one VAV systemprovides cooling and the other provides heating, could be used. This paper proposes a new configuration for dual VAV systemsto improve their operation to reduce the loads on cooling andheating equipment and thereby total energy use. The proposedconfiguration and its sequence of operation can reduce coolingand heating loads by eliminating simultaneous heating andcooling and maximizing the use of outdoor air (OA) for coolingand return air for heating. The performances of both single anddual VAV systems are simulated for given buildings and fordifferent locations to estimate load reductions and fan energysavings achieved by the proposed dual VAV system configurationand control strategies. The simulation results that showsignificant heating load reductions of up to 89%, great fansavings up to 15%, and minor cooling load reductions ofaround 1% can be obtained, depending mainly on load variationsand locations.
