Description

Sustainability and energy conservation has attracted a lot of attention in the recent years, and building plays a key role in energy saving and environment preservation. In this way, in building industry a progressive move can be seen toward realizing net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs). Regarding the NZEB definition (an energy-efficient building where the actual annual delivered energy is less than or equal to the renewable exported energy), one of the main challenges in designing NZEB is development of effective strategies to decrease the annual energy demand. In this work, a sequence framework is developed as an infrastructure to integrate the novel passive strategies into a NZEB in Tehran, Iran as a real case study. First, the passive strategies are optimally designed considering the regional weather conditions and technical characteristics of proposed office building. Second, the strategies are implemented into a real case and the impact of their performance on the total energy consumption are analyzed in operation time. Third, the economic performance of solutions is investigated to justify the economic viability of them. The passive strategies include: 1. Trombe Wall (a solar building design where a wall is built on winter sun side of building with a glass external layer and a high heat capacity internal layer separated by a layer of air), 2. PCM envelope insulation (filling the walls and roofs with phase change materials to thermally insulate them) and 3. Green Roof (a roof of a building that is covered with vegetation and growing medium). The building design together with implementation of passive strategies are simulated by DesignBuilder simulation software which is a powerful tool in building design. The results prove the ability of proposed framework to apply and analyze the passive strategies into a NZEB as well as reduce the impressive amount of the total energy consumption.
