Description

This paper describes unintended consequences and their resolutions following the implementation of facility improvement measures in a building at aCanadian national laboratory campus. Major mechanical room upgrades were implemented, as well as Building Automation System (BAS) programchanges, but the upgrades were not commissioned, and the program changes exacerbated the building’s already negative pressure balance. Repeatedsprinkler pipe freezes resulted in tens of thousands of dollars damage. Plummeting morale sparked intervention by senior executive and technical staff.Resolving the situation required not only the reversal of some of the facility improvement measures, but also a human-centred effort to restore thetenants’ trust and gain their cooperation to implement corrective actions.
