The ventilation performance of residential buildings is essential with increasing occupancy time. The increase of occupancy time has a negative effect on the health of occupants. It aslo deteriorates of indoor air quality. Ventilation is a representative method to improve indoor air quality. However, continuous operation of the ventilation system increases cooling and heating energy. Therefore, in this study, a method of an individual room control ventilation system in apartment houses was proposed to maintain indoor air quality, supply appropriate ventilation rate, and save building energy. The individual room control ventilation system operates individually only when the concentration of Carbon dioxide (CO2) or PM10 in the room rises higher than the standard of indoor air quality or when occupants are in the room. To evaluate the ventilation performance of the individual room control ventilation system, the ventilation rate of the system was measured. The ventilation rate was calculated using a method of measuring the air velocity in the terminal unit and a concentration decay method using a tracer gas. The heating and cooling energy consumption of the individual room control ventilation system was simulated using EnergyPlus. In the simulation, the operation schedule of individual room control ventilation system used the occupancy schedule of the room. The occupancy schedule of the room was prepared using statistical data related to occupancy time. As a result, the ventilation rate during operation of the ventilation system was 0.53ACH (Air change per hour), which satisfied the ventilation standard in Korea (0.5ACH). In the simulation, when applying individual room control ventilation system, cooling energy was saved 3.4%, and heating energy was saved 11.6%. Carbon emissions were reduced by 13.7% due to energy saving.
