Description

The National Science Foundation’s research activities on the heating and cooling of buildings with solar energy have been concentrated in two areas of the Research Applications Directorate, called Research Applied to National Needs (RANN). The two areas are The Division of Advanced Energy Research and Technology and The Office of Public Technology Projects. My assignment is in the Division of Advanced Energy Research and Technology, but I will cover activities in both areas.

The whole Solar Energy program has six major subdivisions:

  • Heating and Cooling of BUildings
  • Thermal Conversion for Central Power Generation
  • Photovoltaic Conversion for Power
  • Wind Conversion for Power
  • Bioconversion for Fuels
  • Ocean Thermal Difference Conversion for Power

The Budget for this program is shown in Fig. 1.

The relationship of activities in the Division of Advanced Energy Research and Technology and the Office of Public Technology Projects is illustrated in Fig. 2. They are currently working together to research the heating and cooling of buildings with solar energy. The Office of Public Technology Projects is working with proof-of-concept experiments that deal with state-of-the-art systems. They obtain and report operating experiences and problem definitions to the Division of Advanced Energy Research and Technology. Advanced research projects develop new components and systems that will provide solutions to these problems. The results can then be utilized in future proof-of-concept experiments
